Martin Wheatley

GUITARS, TENOR GUITAR, HAWAIIN GUITAR, UKULELE, 5-STRING BANJO, MANDOLIN

Martin was born in London in 1958. He is a very versatile musician having played Folk, Rhythm-and-Blues and Rock ‘n’ Roll as well as most Jazz guitar styles and specialises in banjo music from the Ragtime era to the 1920’s. He plays most stringed instruments, from the ukelele to the bass-guitar.
Leader of The Hula Bluebirds and The Arcadians, Wheatley came to the ukulele via Hawaiian music and has been playing the instrument since long before the current boom.
He has studied it intensely and been on a working trip to the Hawaiian Islands. His particular speciality is solo fingerstyle playing and his repertoire includes pieces that might seem impossible to perform on a small four stringed instrument – Bach, Debussy, hot jazz novelties, even The Dambusters March.
He also teaches the instrument and has recently led a series of workshops for Faber and Faber.
Wheatley has toured Europe and America, giving concerts of music from the 20’s and 30’s with both the cabaret band “Rio Trio” and the various Keith Nichols ensembles. Martin is a most authentic and tasteful performer of jazz. Currently he works with The Vitality Five and The Arcadians.
