Formed in 2022 and named The European Jazz quartet
European Jazz Quartet – A tribute show to the ‘Kings of Jazz’ – Louis Armstrong and Sidney Bechet, with the renowned international singer and French trumpeter – Jerome Etcheberry and his quartet. In this show, the audience will be able to get to know the best hits played and sung by Louis Armstrong and Sidney Bechet, considered the undisputed kings of the beginning of jazz and those who were part of the jazz repertoire that went, evolved and matured into what it is today.
JEROME ETCHEBERRY – Trumpet
ADRIAN COX – Clarinet
DAVE KELBIE – Guitar
SÉBASTIEN GIRARDOT – Double Bass
ADRIAN COX a jazz clarinetist and a storyteller rooted in the rhythms of New Orleans. In 2017 he put together a show featuring the story of the life and music of his favourite jazz clarinettist – Edmond Hall. The show, ‘Profoundly Blue’ was featured on BBC 6 Music and on Clare Teal’s Radio 2 jazz programme. It went on to complete three UK tours, was invited to festivals around Europe and played in New York in July 2019. The band has produced two albums (Profoundy Blue Part 1 and Part 2) and sold over 2000 CDs.
Adrian says of Edmond Hall who died in 1967: “He worked in New Orleans and wanted to go to New York. He worked with a lot of big bands, and when he was in New York, he was playing with people like Billie Holiday. He got offered a job with the Duke Ellington Orchestra but turned it down because he wanted to play with smaller groups.
He got to play with some amazing musicians. He has got an incredible sound. His sound was really unique. He can make it sound so gravelly. It was also really powerful. He had a warm sound but he was also cutting edge. He was a huge influence on me, not just the excitement but also the tone. It is something that I have not tried to emulate, but something that I have tried to continue in my own fashion. He was one of the greats who just sailed over the top.”
JEROME ETCHEBERRY Trumpeter, singer, arranger and composer, Jérôme Etcheberry studied music at the Conservatoire de la Teste and at the CNR in Bordeaux. He then began his professional career as a soloist in the large Air Force Jazz Orchestra before joining the Haricots Rouges formation in 2023.
He then settled in Paris where he collected mutes and multiplied artistic experiences through concerts with Evan Christopher, Claude Tissendier, Duffy Jackson, Michel Pastre, Guillaume Nouaux, Hugh Coltman, Bob Wilber, Nicolas Montier, Laurent Mignard Duke Orchestra , Tuxedo Big Band, Olivier Franc, Lucien Barbarin, Jessie Davis, Dan Barrett…
After the success of the Hoozee Foozee band and the Swingberries, he is now the head of the “Satchmocracy” a Popstet paying homage to Louis Armstrong.
It’s hard to imagine a drumless ensemble without Dave Kelbie and Sébastien Girardot completing the musical circle. This highly respected rhythm section has performed with numerous projects on main stages of festivals across the globe. Not least Django a la Creole and Don Vappie & Jazz Creole. Lauded universally for their flexibility & variety of swing and the solidity of their accompaniment, Tcha’s description of this long-standing and proven bi-nome seems even more appropriate in this setting: “The Rolls Royce of Rhythm Sections”.
